iPod Earbud Addiction

I’ve noticed an epidemic of people wearing their iPod earbuds to do just about everything. Even during situations that require higher degrees of concentration, like studying, writing and programming. Go to any coffee shop and you’ll see it. As much as I enjoy music and can do many things with headphones, I feel that people are harming themselves by constantly reaching for their mp3 player when they need to focus. Case in point—imagine you are a high school student with dreams of getting into a prestigious college. You are sitting down one Saturday morning to take the dreaded SAT exam. Even if it were allowed, would you really want to strap on some headphones during the test? Unless you don’t want to attend the college of your choice, this probably isn’t the wisest move. When people are doing math homework, reading a history book, or writing a term paper, however, they don’t seem to equate decibels with lack of concentration. Trust me, your concentration is being affected. Next time you’re sitting down to do some serious work, maybe try it without the headphones. Save your battery for the gym.
Music is My Boyfriend

I was reading a blog post about the relationship designers have with music on Design Observer. Adrian Shaughnessy writes: “I’ve never worked in a design studio where music wasn’t being played pretty much constantly… What is it with graphic designers and music?” Adrian has a good point. The image of a room full of designers with headphones on while staring at the computer screen is almost becoming cliché.

Here at Tuesday, we’re an iPod wearing, mash up mixing, CD-swapping army of music enthusiasts who take our tunes as seriously as we take our work. Internet radio is a collective favorite, so it shouldn’t raise an eyebrow that I’m dedicating this post to the web radio space—in particular the (arguably) biggest player in the Internet radio universe.

Rock musician Andrew WK has, for the moment anyway, stopped writing and touring. Claiming to have a new perspective on what makes people truly happy, Andrew WK (AWK) wants to put his music on hiatus to pursue a career as a motivational speaker and is currently traveling around the country to lecture to people on the subject of personal happiness and fulfillment.
One of the most probable reasons behind this drastic career change? An elusive figure named “Steev Mike” who has been threatening AWK’s professional career by flooding his websites with cryptic, hostile messages. “Steev Mike”, rumor has it, is AWK’s creator but has only been credited as a creative source on AWK’s first album, “I Get Wet.” Since then, Mike has become somewhat of an urban legend.

This is a few days old, but worth checking out if you haven’t already seen it. From a marketing standpoint it’s interesting that, for $.30 extra, the DRM-free songs will be encoded at 256 kbps, double the standard 128 kbps of all current iTunes songs. I just love watching the Apple marketing folks work their magic. What a hook!
