New iPhone Retailing for $200 Less

Well, we all knew the bomb would drop sooner or later. I just don’t think any of us realized how big a bombshell it would be or how soon it would drop! Yesterday, Steve Jobs announced an 8GB iPhone with a 2-year wireless plan retailing for $200.00 less than the original iPhone. (Incidentally, if you were a front-of-the-queue iPhone adopter, your phone isn’t even 100 days old yet!)
For those of us who decided to hold out for the later iPhone model, I must say, the savvy consumer satisfaction factor that came in the wake of Job’s announcement is one of pure, unadulterated glee. (Or to be perfectly plain: being cheap actually paid off!)
For those that queued up for hours to be the very first iPhone owners, well, they’re probably seeing green at the moment—about two hundred dollars worth. Already there is talk in the blogosphere from angry consumers who view this as a direct slap in the face by Apple, some even demanding to be reimbursed $200.00!
To these I say:
Chill.
This is just the way the ball bounces. If a company has recouped enough of its losses so it can afford to lower the price of a product in a record three months time, good for them.
And really, hasn’t that “extra” $200.00 more than paid for itself over the past three months? Customer satisfaction ratings on iPhones are pretty much off the charts, so it isn’t really justifiable to suddenly claim that the original $600.00 price tag was a rip-off. I’m quite certain that the pleasure of being daily harassed by goggling, awe-struck strangers asking reverentially, ‘Ohhhh, is that an iPhone’ was why you willingly forked over that $600 in the first place: you were the first.
