Create one HTML page, invite designers from around the world to style it using only CSS and images. This is CSS Zen Garden—an exploration of the power and variety of standards-compliant design. There are over 200 designs posted to date, all styling the same in one HTML page (really!).
The HTML source, as well as any of the stylesheets and images, are freely available to download and examine. You are also free to submit a design yourself. Here are the guidelines:
- The CSS must be W3C-compliant valid CSS. They prefer CSS 1 but commonly used features in CSS 2 are acceptable.
- The art must fit within their Creative Commons license and respect other peoples’ copyrights.
- The design works in Windows on (IE and Mozilla) and Mac (Safari and Mozilla). They really prefer compatible design to bleeding-edge techniques that 2% of the world can’t render properly.
- The design works even with non-standard fonts scale (up to 150% in Mozilla).
- There is no horizontal scrollbar at 800×600.
- They’re pretty tired of garden/asian imagery themes.
- They’re also pretty tired of the intentionally horizontal-scrolling layout.
