I’m Not Cool Enough for Gmail

My sister sent me an email a few months ago asking me why I didn’t have a Gmail account. She is not the only one who has asked me that same question lately. Friends, friends of friends, acquaintances, and general people I meet off the street (not really) have been asking me the same thing. When I tell all of them I have an Earthlink email account, they shudder with disbelief. “Wow! But Earthlink is so…old school.”
Well, I’m sorry but I haven’t bothered changing my email address because everything and everyone I know has my Earthlink email. If I change it, something might go wrong. What if my ex-boyfriend from 10 years ago couldn’t get in touch with me? Well nevermind, that wouldn’t be so bad. What if someone from my past who I wanted to reconnect with could not email me? And what about the pain of having to change it for every online account I own! Horrid!
But today my insecurities won out and I signed up for a Gmail account. Here’s my address: iwanttofitin@gmail.com.

Wow… Earthlink… that’s as bad as still having an AOL account. But I don’t know about Gmail. The cool thing is to have a personalized privately owned email domain like @yournamehere.com.
Ouch, Miguel! AOL? That was a bit harsh. Gmail is awesome, but don’t put any private information in there!
No private information? That’s disconcerting…I guess I’m really not cool enough.
I get the same question.
I use hotmail for various reasons, not the least of which is: they had the best system at the time.
I also have a personal domain which i only give to friends and family and potential employers or clients.
Generally speaking, webmail keeps the viruses from downloading directly to my hard drive…
