Apple Service Woes

G5 Power SupplyThis weekend, the power supply failed on my G5. This has happened to my PCs several times, so I take it in stride. Just make a quick stop at the electronics store, buy a new power supply and get up and running in short order. It turns out that this doesn’t apply to Macs.

Reminiscent of the old iPod battery video, I was being denied the sale of a new power supply by Apple. I was told by the CSR that the only way to get it fixed was to bring the G5 to an Apple store and leave it with them for several days. I’m sure there are places on the web to procure such power supplies, but I needed to take care of it on Saturday while I actually could make the time to do it.

I’m happy to pay Apple to service my computer in most situations. In this case, however, it is very inconvenient to be without a Mac for the duration of the repair. What frustrates me is that Apple won’t give me a choice to fix it myself. Even if I end up buying the power supply and causing more damage, shouldn’t it be my choice?
