Apple to Offer DRM-free Music

This is a few days old, but worth checking out if you haven’t already seen it. From a marketing standpoint it’s interesting that, for $.30 extra, the DRM-free songs will be encoded at 256 kbps, double the standard 128 kbps of all current iTunes songs. I just love watching the Apple marketing folks work their magic. What a hook!
So, does the added value make the price increase easier to swallow? For me it does, because the audio CDs I make for my car will hopefully sound a bit cleaner. They got me! I guess we’ll find out if that’s how everyone else feels about it come May when the first of the DRM-free songs hit the iTunes store. My guess is that this is a pretty game-changing move.
On a side note, it means that the relatively small hard drive on the iPhone just got smaller, and we’ll all need to get extensions for our desks to hold all the new external hard drives we’ll be buying…

I heard on the news this morning that Yahoo is also now offering DRM-free downloads for a higher $1.99 each. Oh and I also wonder how the dispute between the EU and Apple regarding itunes is going to pan out?
