What’s under the hood?

My wife and I were driving our 2000 Mercedes SUV to the beach last summer. For some reason, our conversation turned to whether or not we should be looking to replace our aging family truckster with a new car. She felt that a new car would be more reliable, while I wanted to keep our car. During the middle of our discussion, I opened the sunroof (something we’ve only used about 10 times) to the of sound cracking metal. A large piece of the sunroof assembly popped out and fell into the car. While holding a mangled sunroof wind deflector, she said “do you really want to keep this car?” Is it so wrong that I still like our Mercedes?
Running on Rails – Part 1

I flipped through a few of the beginning Rails books and settled on Patrick Lenz’s “Build Your Own Ruby On Rails Web Applications.” I think it was the blue and orange cover that persuaded me to select it, but it turned out to be a good choice. It promises to teach you how to build your own Digg.com style site if you make it through the entire text. Note that Digg.com was built on Rails.
Fuel For Thought

My mom is not the “Betty Crocker” type. Growing up I didn’t rush home after school to the aroma of delicious home-cooked dinner. In my house it was more like which take-away menu were we in the mood for. So, in my adult life, more often than not, I go out to eat instead of cook at home. Thankfully, I live in a city that is full of incredible restaurants, in every variety and cuisine, so I am never without a ton of choices. And while I do like to try different ones as much as possible, there are a few restaurants in this city that I cannot go a week without frequenting. Ammo is at the top of that list.

A bit of inspiration I’ve taken away from my recent travels at a dozen industry trade shows and events comes from a gentlemen named Ted Leonsis. Ted is the Vice Chairman of AOL and publishes a blog called Ted’s Take.

We have a new toy at the office. It’s called a CompuCarve and its made by Sears. (Thanks to Dianna and Bill for turning me on to it) It’s the first reasonably priced wood and plastic carving tool that doesn’t take a huge learning curve to get great work out of quickly. So far we have knocked out couple copies of our logo, but I’m going to really put it to the test this weekend. Look for some results pics. Next week.

In 1958 the United States created the Advanced Research Projects Agency to compete with Soviet technology (The USSR launched Sputnik four months earlier). Eleven years later the worlds first packet switched network, ARPANET,was born. Research continued, innovation flourished and on January 1, 1983 the National Science Foundation unveiled the worlds first wide-area network and the TCP/IP protocol. The modern internet was born.

The Trendspotting Trend

For as long as there’s been a youth culture, there has been the trendsetter and the trendspotter. It was previously up to modish blokes with horn rimmed glasses in stuffy high rise offices to determine what the public was going to like by, very effectively, ramming it down our throats. And while that elusive ‘they’ still wield an influence on youth culture, the revolution of the information age has blurred the line between trendsetter and trendspotter to the point that, now, they are more or less the same. It’s trendy to spot trends, and trendspotting websites are indeed in themselves trendsetting as evidenced by the many millions who visit such sites religiously.

Come and join us tomorrow, Tuesday, March 27th, as LA Flash turns four years old, as we host the Los Angeles launch party for Adobe Creative Suite 3—the most groundbreaking digital creative toolset ever released, and the first release from Adobe after the acquisition of Macromedia, so I think we all know what that means (consistent UIs and massive cross-tool workflow enhancements, baby!).
