Ever wondered what it would be like to be inside a vending machine? I know I was curious! So when I found the gigantic Nissan Sentra vendor, it didn’t take long before I flew inside. Yes, you read that right. Flew! Everyone can fly and teleport inside Second Life. It may be a little strange at first, but after you get used to it there’s great joy in soaring the virtual skies. I first stumbled across Second Life when my college professor insisted that we all get an account and do a bit of exploration. At first I was hesitant to do so because of all the wayward stories that I’d heard about the Virtual world, but he kept encouraging us to do it and so I eventually got an account. Almost a year later, I have to say that I’m glad I listened to him!
I found the Nissan Vending machine while I was searching for Real Life companies that had locations inside the virtual world. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting at first, but I can tell you that I wasn’t expecting to be greeted by the large vending machine! There was another building near by with a secret code spray painted on the walls. I didn’t know what to do with the code at first, but it quickly became clear when I examined the vending machine. Punch in the secret code and get your free Nissan Sentra. Sweet! After making a careful selection, I had myself a blue Nissan Sentra, and a nice stretch of road to drive it on. Did you ever like those little car sets with the huge rollercoaster loops? Well! I sure did, so I was ecstatic when I found that Nissan had one on their land. It was very thrilling to drive through the loop and zoom around the race track!
My explorations left me wondering: with names like American Apparel, Dell and Circuit City already enjoying Second Life success, which Real Life company would be the next to give virtual marketing a try? How would they express their corporate identity in a world where you can be and do anything you want? And will this take world economy to a whole new level?
I can’t wait to find out. Until then, my adventures in Second Life continue!
